But I Don’t Want to Do That…

I’ve never had a job where I couldn’t pinpoint the least desirable part. For example, in lawn care, weed eating takes the crown (for my out-of-town readers, that’s trimming around trees, shrubs, sidewalks, and such). Every job or task has a “weed-eating” aspect.
Those undesirable tasks tend to mess with our eyeballs. They make us start looking up and around, paying way too much attention to what everyone else is doing. Before long, we’re wondering why we have to do the hard stuff while everyone else seems to be living the good life.
I’ve done this so many times it makes me nauseous. Why? Because when I start comparing, I usually have a poor attitude and end up doing poor work. My mind stops focusing on the job at hand—doing it to the best of my ability.
Simon Peter found himself in that same place in John 21. The resurrected Jesus cooked him breakfast by the seashore and told him, “Tend my sheep.” Peter seemed to understand the assignment—until he learned that tending those sheep would be difficult. Then his eyes started wandering toward John, wondering about his job.
Jesus corrected Peter—and me—saying, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.”
Translated into Blount County, Alabama English: “Phillip, mind your own business and do what I asked you to do.” Yessir!
Here’s to you and what the Lord has called you to do. Meanwhile, I’ll be over here trying to stay focused on what He’s called me to do—and keeping in step with Him.
Hey Jesus, wait up…
