Dad was one that didn't put up with any bull. He buys me a car - a '76 Ford Torino. Man, I thought I was the big deal.

Friend of mine in the car, I was trying to show out, you know. So I go down this road that's called Pisgah Highway to Pisgah Church, and it's got a gravel parking lot. So I get in the middle of that gravel parking lot, and I go around and around. I mean, I'm doing donuts and I'm slinging every bit of that gravel out of the parking lot.

This is no cell phones, no nothing. So I'm not thinking anybody, you know. So I get home. Dad, he work night shift in the mines, and then he built cabinets during the day, and he's sitting there, and he don't say a word when I walk in.

So we're eating, and he picks up a pencil, and he just takes a piece of paper and a pad and a pencil. He just starts going around and round, doesn't say a word. And he said, "You know what this is, boy?"

"No."

And about the time I got "no" out of my mouth, he said, "That's you doing donuts in Pisgah church's parking lot." He said, "You know what this is?"

I said, "No, sir."

He said, "That's you raking every bit of it back straight." I raked every bit of it with a two foot wide rake.

Sometimes the most powerful lessons come without lectures, without yelling, and without long explanations. Sometimes they come from a father who works night shifts in the mines, builds cabinets during the day, and knows that actions have consequences - even when you think nobody's watching.
