The Day I Learned How Far People Will Go to Defend Their Property

I was 18 years old, fresh on the job, and completely unprepared for what was about to unfold.

It was my first day working in repossession. I didn’t grow up around this line of work, and honestly, I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. All I knew was that we had a job to do—go recover a shed from a property in the middle of nowhere.

We pulled up to the house, and that’s when I saw it. The shed was tucked away in the backyard. Sitting on the front porch, though, were a couple of pit bulls. Just watching. Just waiting.

We tried to call the owner. No answer. So we made a call: we’d go in anyway. We thought the dogs were chained up. We were wrong.

We backed the truck up and started preparing to hook onto the shed. I turned my back for a moment—just a second—and that’s when I heard the tires. A little Civic came tearing down the gravel drive, rocks flying in every direction. A kid, maybe 16 or 17, jumped out and came storming toward us.

I kept calm. Tried to explain. But you could feel the tension in the air—this wasn’t going to go smooth.

Then he made his move.

The kid turned, walked back toward the house, and let one of the dogs off the chain.

I didn’t even hear it at first. Just a deep bark—close. I spun around, and there it was: this massive pit bull, full speed, straight at me. He missed me by inches. I didn’t care where I ran—I just knew I had to get away.

This was ridiculous. I didn’t sign up for this kind of danger on day one.

Finally, the owner showed up. He got the dogs back under control and locked up. I thought maybe—just maybe—it was over.

But then I heard gravel crunching behind me again. I turned around… and saw that same kid walking around the corner of the house—with a sawed-off shotgun.

In that moment, everything in me froze. No paycheck is worth this. No shed is worth this.

That was the day I learned something that’s stayed with me ever since:

People will defend what’s theirs—with everything they’ve got.

And rednecks? They'll do it with dogs, shotguns, and no hesitation.
