“You ol’ hard-headed…”

Full disclosure: I am hard-headed.
Been that way so long I can’t remember when it started.
No, I ain’t proud of it. I’ve asked the Lord to sand that edge off more times than I can count. But like Paul and that thorn, it’s still there. So I fight it daily.
What can motivate a man to be less hard-headed?
Maybe this:
In Ecclesiastes 4:13 it says,
“A poor yet wise lad is better than an old and foolish king who no longer knows how to receive instruction.”
That’ll preach.
The boy’s broke — but he listens.
The king’s powerful — but he won’t.
One has hope because he’s teachable.
The other is trapped because he thinks he already knows.
Hard-headed pride don’t just make you stubborn.
It can make you hopeless.
And I’d rather swallow my pride than become an old fool who can’t be told nothing.
Plus, I’ve got a memory that leaks worse than a radiator shot with a 3.5-inch turkey load — so I sure don’t need to quit listening now.
So next time pride tries to jump to the front of your mind, remember that young lad.
Your future might depend on whether you’re willing to be corrected today.
